skills
As we start to see the bigger effects of climate change, we will need to become increasingly self sufficient and self reliant. As a child, I would never have imagined I’d be making a website (what’s that?) thinking about how to survive climate change (say what?) but here I am and here it is. My vision is to help my beloved town prepare itself and have the best chance of not only surviving, but thriving in the new world we are creating.
By the way, it’s definitely not too late to stop the worst happening – if everyone did everything they possibly could to curb their fossil fuel usage and unnecessary consumption the scientists still believe we can keep warming below 3 degrees.
Back to skills – we need to start building our abilities to do things ‘the old fashioned way’. Consider which of these best suit you as an individual and start practising and building knowledge. These are just some of the thoughts I’ve had of things that will most likely have to be done ourselves or locally:
- haircuts
- dairy product production (as much as we are trying to reduce large consumption of this)
- repairing things
- sewing
- spinning and related handicrafts such as knitting and crochet
- butchery
- fishing
- mechanical repairs, especially for bikes
- ceramics
- first aid
- herbal remedies
- livestock growing
- fruit and vegetable growing
- weed control
- burning country (inspired by Indigenous traditions)
- building/plumbing/electrical
- carpentry
